3 DIY HVAC Maintenance Tasks for Homeowners

January 25, 2018

If you can fix it yourself, you will. Why pay exorbitant amounts of money to take your car to a mechanic in Harrison, Ohio, when you could do the same work in your garage? Why hire someone to build a shed in your backyard when you could do it yourself?

DIY tasks will definitely save you money, but you shouldn’t try to fix everything yourself. For example, you should leave most of your HVAC maintenance to professional technicians. While you should avoid doing most HVAC repairs yourself, you can still complete DIY tasks around your home that will benefit you and your HVAC system. Here are three DIY HVAC maintenance tasks for homeowners.

Change Your Air Filter

The air filter in your HVAC system does more than catch particles; it also can help or hinder the efficiency of your system. Without regular replacement, filters get clogged, which reduces your indoor air quality and puts strain on your system. Check your air filter once a month and replace it if necessary.

Clean Your Home

We know it’s not the most exciting DIY project, but cleaning your home will do wonders for your HVAC system. Debris and clutter impede airflow and could potentially reduce efficiency. Make a habit of keeping your home clean, especially areas around vents and heat registers and the outdoor compressor unit.

Seal Your Home

Perhaps the most DIY-esque project you can take on in relation to your HVAC system is to seal your home. Outdoor air often infiltrates your living space through gaps around doors and windows. Use weatherstripping and caulk to seal those areas. Take a look at your attic, as well, where poor insulation often disturbs temperature control and reduces HVAC efficiency.

These three simple DIY HVAC maintenance tasks will improve the performance of your heating and cooling system, leading to cheaper utility bills and a more comfortable home. For professional HVAC maintenance call us at 812-227-3001.
