What Is an HVAC Zoning System?

April 23, 2020

An HVAC Zoning system allows you to control the temperature for each area or “zone” in the home rather than heating or cooling the entire house to the same temperature. If you get an HVAC zoning system installed by Western Hills Heating & Air Conditioning in West Harrison, IN, you can use one system to set different temperatures in different rooms.

How an HVAC Zoning System Works

A zoning system consists of a control system with a damper and thermostat for each room or zone of the home. The central control panel handles the requests from the thermostats. It opens the motorized dampers for the zones calling for heating or cooling and closes the dampers for zones that are not calling. When the calls are satisfied, the control panel shuts off the air system unit. Each zone has its own thermostat as well, and both the dampers and the thermostats are connected to the control panel by wiring.

Lower Energy Costs

The most important benefit of using an HVAC zoning system is the savings in energy use and the resulting cost savings that occur. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save up to 30% on the average heating and cooling bill. While the upfront cost of this type of zoning system is more than a traditional unit, the system can pay for itself in a few years.

Less Wear and Tear on Your System

Running your zoning HVAC system less means less usage, which means less wear and tear. The longer the system lasts, the longer your money stays in your pocket.

Anytime you can save energy and money while providing a comfortable environment, you are doing well. With an HVAC zoning system, you are fulfilling all these tasks.
