Ohio and Indiana Premier Geothermal Experts Since 1990. Serving West Harrison, IN Cincinnati, OH and Surrounding Areas

At Western Hills Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc., our highly skilled Geothermal HVAC System experts have been serving customers in the states of Ohio and Indiana for over three decades. During that time, we’ve offered our communities expert HVAC services and high-efficiency installations to help them make the most of the perfect marriage of nature and technology.

Installing a geothermal system can be several times the price of an air-source system with the same heating and cooling capacity. However, these additional costs will be returned in the energy savings you’ll enjoy over the next five to ten years, depending on your use and energy cost, plus available incentives in your area for geothermal systems.

The lifespan of a geothermal system is 24 years for the inside components and 50 years or longer for the ground loop. As people have become more familiar with geothermal systems, their popularity has grown. About 50,000 geothermal heat pumps are installed in the United States each year.

What Is a Geothermal HVAC System?

A geothermal system is a highly efficient HVAC technology that provides fully renewable energy that’s sourced from underground or from a body of water. This state-of-the-art technology, available in the form of a geothermal heat pump, is designed to use the same ground or water source to cool your home in summer and warm it in winter, making it an ideal home comfort solution. The systems offer a virtually endless supply of energy to maximize your family’s comfort while providing one of the most energy efficient HVAC options available today. With underground systems such as these, indoor temperature and humidity levels can be precisely controlled, resulting in dependable and consistent year-round comfort despite minimal energy consumption. This is a real win/win for you and your family.

How Do Geothermal Heat Pumps Work?

Geothermal heat pumps use a heat exchanger to transfer heat from one location to another. When set in heating mode, these intricate systems draw heat that’s naturally found underground from its original location and efficiently transfer it to your home to provide warmth on a winter day. As is the case with most heat pumps, when a heat pump is set in cooling mode, the process is reversed. The excess heat that makes you and your family feel uncomfortable on a hot summer day is drawn out of your home and carried underground, where it is cooled.

There are 4 basic geothermal energy sources, depending on ground or water sources available around your home:

  • Horizontal Loop
  • Vertical Loop
  • Pond (lake) Loop
  • Open Loop (well-water)

What Are the Advantages of Geothermal HVAC Systems Over Conventional Heat Pumps?

Conventional, air-sourced heat pumps are less energy-efficient than their geothermal counterparts simply because the temperature deep underground is far more consistent than the temperature of the air that conventional heat pumps use as their external heat source. This simple fact can save you money by reducing your wintertime energy consumption by as much as 50 percent in comparison to a conventional, air-sourced heat pump system.

A few other advantages of geothermal technology follow:

  • It not only can heat and cool your home but can also be used to provide hot water.
  • The system requires very little maintenance.
  • This technology typically has a longer lifespan than the air-sourced heat pump.
  • Geothermal systems are much quieter than conventional heat pumps.
